The Story Behind “CREATING ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES”
Arcade Dancing...Chinese Dancing...Club Dancing…
Those were the former interests of the three founders of Legacy Dance Co., Jia Jun, Bao Wen and Ore. That was before the three musketeers first ventured into street dancing. With the common desire to know and understand more about street dance culture, different circumstances had brought them to first train together under the vivacious street dance co-curriculum activity known as New Revolving Age (NRA). More than just an avenue to ‘escape’ reality and responsibilities of their lives, the progressive dance training provided became a way to build tenacity and the drive to pursue excellence. More than a casual leisure activity to pass time, it became a platform to build up the character of individuals, and a strong yet unique bond among their fellow peers.
Being together was not all pure joy and laughter - tears, sweat and adrenaline rush were common leading up to the days of showcases and competitions, both locally and internationally. Getting reprimanded for the tiniest mistake and being held accountable for the details of every movement of every individual had helped align the hearts of the dancers. They viewed themselves not as separate individual entities, but as one crew. The alignment laid a common ground for the dancers that they were in it together, leading up to be more than just a ‘show’. It was a performance that displayed tangible representation of true camaraderie and hard work in pursuit of excellence. Through the process of losing confidence, to rebuilding and then eventually strengthening it helped them push through difficulties. Here, a mutual knowledge was established; knowing anything can be achieved with the right people walking alongside towards the same result.
While not everyone remained in the performing arts scene after polytechnic, the special camaraderie built among the founders of Legacy Dance Co. propelled them to do something more with the knowledge they had gained from their previous mentors back in school.
Making dance to be a full-time profession seemed relatively absurd at that point of time, yet the question had always been, “Why not?”. In fact, making dance to be a full time profession still seems pretty absurd in today’s context as arts had been negatively associated with impracticality for ages. However, the trio took a leap of faith and believed that the beauty of street dance should not only be a mere after-school extracurricular activity.
Legacy Dance Co. was conceived and made its official mark in the Singapore arts and young entrepreneurial scene in the year 2014.
It started as a simple idea over text, dreaming of the potential of bringing people together through dance and eventually providing a safe learning environment for other like-minded individuals to be in. Uncertainties were plenty at the start, but it was soon obvious that there was a growing number of students who are keen to pursue dance in Singapore. The Legacy Experience (TLE) was conceived in 2014. TLE began as a programme that helps new dancers learn to express his or her individuality, build body awareness and a lasting community. The numbers grew from 46 in the first batch back in 2016 to the current 256 students under its training programme. To date, there has been over 900 students who are currently part of the TLE community.
TLE was an apt solution to the problem that the dancers in the dance industry were facing - the lack of a safe avenue for progressive and structured training for anybody interested to learn street dance in Singapore.
What is Dance to...YOU?
“A TOOL to bring people together, to achieve big things, and help to build lives because of the friendships made; to show empathy, care & concern.” - Jia Jun
“A way for me to COMMUNICATE.” - Ore
“A CONNECTION. A connection to an emotion, or event, or situation or even a connection to a character.” - Bao Wen
Having people come together is great but at the end of the day, when there are different people in our lives working alongside us, there are bound to be differences in opinions and ways of doing things. Conflicts are bound to arise. However, because of what was taught in dance training, we know that a fundamental trust for one another even with different opinions, is important for growth.
That boils down to how Legacy Dance Co. is more than a dance company; it is a belief that relationships are essential in lives, and that endless possibilities can be achieved when individuals in the dance industry, though flawed, come together can dare to dream big.
